Fallout London

Fallout: London is an insanely impressive mod for Fallout 4, bringing the beloved franchise over to good ol’ Blighty.

Fallout London

It is no secret that we love the Fallout Series, from officially licensed Special Edition gaming chairs to pointing out the one with Matthew Perry. It is safe to say we are heckin’ excited to see one of our favourite games set in the familiar locales of London. Not just that, this is an amazing feat the Folon Team has achieved – trail-blazing some might say. So, today we are taking an in-depth look at this DLC-sized mod and celebrating the fact it is now available to play on our gaming PCs!

What is Fallout: London?

Fallout: London is a fan-designed, DLC-sized mod for Bethesda’s 2015 title, Fallout 4. Staying true to its inspiration, this is a post-apocalyptic RPG with post-war vibes, only this time it is set outside of the US. Swapping out Americana for British iconography, this ambitious project is set in London. Iconic landmarks and famous boroughs have been recreated with a post-nuclear spin by a dedicated cross-discipline team of amateur and industry-level individuals. A true labour of love, every detail in this mod is absolutely stunning.

Key Differences Between Fallout: London and the Franchise

Aside from the obvious difference in setting, there are a few key ways in which Fallout: London deviates from the source material. Set between the events of Fallout 1 and 2, this game takes place in 2237 – a full forty years before Fallout 4. What’s more, the FEV (Forced Evolutionary Virus) has not made it to the UK by this point, meaning there is a fresh set of never-seen-before monsters to fight. As such, Fallout: London will have its own storyline, NPCs, weaponry, equipment, and even factions.

The biggest difference: There is no Vault-Tec in the UK. This corporate giant never crossed the pond, according to the Fallout: London lore. As such, there is no Vault Boy mascot peppered throughout the game. Instead, you get enjoy plenty of iconic British imagery and locales.

Fallout: London Camden

Originally, the game wasn’t going to be voice acted. Happily, all the major characters, gangs, and factions are now fully voiced!

Fallout: London Story and Factions

Featuring up to 90 hours of gameplay and 200 quests, Fallout: London promises an in-depth story exploring this beautiful city. Akin to other games in the Fallout franchise, there are a number of factions all at war and butting heads with each other for various reasons. As the storyline for Fallout: London is fresh and new, so are the warring factions. There are seven in total, the Gentry, Tommies, 5th Column, Camelot, Isle of Dogs Syndicate, Vagabonds, and the mysterious Angel. Here’s a breakdown of each faction.

Fallout: London Gentry logo

 The Gentry

These are the current rulers of London, with ties to pre-war aristocracy and government. From their base in Westminster, their rule is strict and with a vision to recreate the United Kingdom once more. So far, they only truly hold power in London. Demanding tithes, they claim to be a democracy, but are actually a Feudal Aristocratic Hegemony. Fancy words for “bad”.

Tommies

This group originally formed as a militia to act as protectors of London, but best laid plans and all that. In truth, they are a tool for the Gentry. They serve as defence on the walls and territory boundaries, dressed in retro-futuristic Great War uniforms.

Fallout: London Tommies logo
Fallout: London 5th Column logo

5th Column

Led by a woman named Eve Varney, the 5th Column want to tear down London’s current establishment and “rebuild a new empire from its ashes”. In the image of their leader, no less. It’s a populist movement that is gaining traction in the lower orders of London.

Camelot

Inspired by WWII commandos and Arthurian legends, Camelot is an underground group fighting for a representative republican. Forced into hiding by violent Gentry ruling, they fight for revolution and the rights of post-apocalyptic citizens. Their goal is to learn from history and use that knowledge to create a brighter future for all.

Fallout: London Isle of Dogs Sudicate logo

Isle of Dogs Syndicate

These are the first criminal syndicates of the game. They control the borough of Millwall and serve as merchants, running a large scavenger operation. Wealthy and with professional criminal vibes, they claim to be a pre-war gang. They even have a rival gang, The Vagabonds, with who they’ve been feuding since murdering their leader. As one of the big dogs in London, the powers that be eat into their profits, so the Isle of Dogs Syndicate is open to a change in management.

The Vagabonds

Rivals to the Isle of Dogs Syndicate, the Vagabonds are proper British gangsters. Full on Peaky Blinders. They are fuelled by revenge, determined to destroy their enemies. Once upon a time, they wanted to serve the same purpose as the Syndicate, but with less violent intimidation and more equitable distribution of power. Such a noble goal has been lost to the overwhelming need for revenge. Plus, their leader, Sebastian Gaunt, is an all-round abrasive man whose men may well want to betray him, despite him originally wanting what was best for them.

Fallout: London Vagabonds logo
Fallout: London Angel logo

Angel

The last faction is something of a wild card. No one truly knows who the Angel group is or where they are from. Some say they come from a pre-war deep science ministry; others say they are made up to scare the gullible. Whatever their elusive origin, the group is believed to be headed by an equally mysterious man, Mr Smythe. Outside of the general public, the claim is Mr Smythe secretly runs London with the help of his agent. Truthfully, no one knows – just how Mr Smythe likes it.

Fallout: London Map

One of the most impressive things about this mod is just how huge it is. The Fallout: London map is of a similar size to the Fallout 4 Commonwealth, possibly somewhere between nine and ten-thousand square miles. It is chock full of iconic London boroughs, from Camden to Bromley, Islington to Greenwich. All made over with post-nuclear decay and destruction.

My words could never do these images justice, so I’m just going to let them talk for themselves.

Fallout: London Content

There are two great things to know about some of the Fallout: London details. One, we are getting British-themed weaponry and armour. Two, some of it is available as stand-alone mods. This includes, and is not limited to, the Webley 1913 gun and Junkie Knight armour. As with other Fallout games, certain weapons will have a certain “cobbled together” vibe, like the pipe pistol. However, this game is going to create opportunity for and encourage melee combat. Overall, there will be fewer guns than in other Fallout titles, and an up tick in close-range weaponry.

Official Release

Since it was first announced, we have been not-so-patiently waiting for Fallout: London to drop. An official release came close back in April 2024, which was ultimately scuppered by the Fallout 4 next-gen update. There was even the heart-breaking fear that this update could break the mod altogether.

Thankfully, the Folon team kept at it, delaying the release until they were ready to launch. As of July 25th 2024, we can finally play out our post-apocalyptic London fantasies!

How to Install Fallout: London

As a hefty mod, it’s not just a matter of downloading Fallout: London and simply booting up the game. Those next-gen updates have made it a little more complicated than that.

We’ve got the instructions you need to install Fallout: London using either Steam or GOG.com. The latter is the platform distributing this mod, so you will need to launch the game via GOG GALAXY regardless of which installation method you use. Plus, this mod will completely take over your Fallout 4 installation. If you want to play the original game again, you will have to uninstall the mod, then reinstall everything. Cloud saves will also need disabling.

It should be noted that you cannot currently play Fallout: London on a copy of Fallout 4 purchased from Epic Games. If this ever changes, we’ll be sure to add those instructions, too!

The other thing is that Fallout: London requires all the Fallout 4 DLC to run, too. This includes Far Harbour, Nuka-World, Automatron, and all the workshop packs. The Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition includes all of these natively.

In terms of storage, Fallout: London will take an additional 33.8GB of disc space, with plenty of buffer space to go through the installation process safely.

How to Install Using Steam

To install Fallout: London on Steam, you need to make sure you have a copy of Fallout 4 purchased from this platform. Firstly, your copy of Fallout 4 needs to be compatible with the mod. This means rolling back to the previous update, 1.10.163.0. This can be achieved by downloading each piece of this version of Fallout 4, deleting your current files, and then copying the new downloads into your current installation of Fallout 4.

Here’s the full breakdown of the installation process, including getting the previous update version:

  1. On your browser, type in steam://open/console to prompt Steam into opening the console.
  2. Download each part of the previous Fallout 4: GOTY Edition version:
    • Part A: download_depot 377160 377161 7497069378349273908

    • English Version: download_depot 377160 377164 2178106366609958945
  3. Next, download each DLC.

    • Nuka-World ENG language pack: download_depot 377160 393895 7677765994120765493
  4. These files should all appear in separate depot folders within your Steam library folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_377160 (default).
  5. On your desktop, you need to create a new folder and copy all these previously mentioned folders across. This creates a whole second version of Fallout 4: GOTY Edition. It is advised to delete the original downloads once you have copied them across, to save on space.
  6. Next, delete everything in your current Fallout 4: GOTY Edition installation folder and replace it with the new folder you’ve created.
  7. Boom! You’re ready to install Fallout: London via GOG GALAXY and launch it following the launcher’s instructions.

How to Install using GOG.com

Using GOG.com is a little simpler than Steam. Your only requirement is you have a GOG copy of Fallout 4. Then simply follow these instructions:

  1. Install the English version of Fallout 4: GOTY Edition via GOG GALAXY.
  2. Download Fallout: London from GOG.com – for free!
  3. Install the mod via GOG GALAXY and launch the game.
  4. Follow the launcher’s instructions.

How to Fix the Crashes

Now, there’s nothing worse than going through a fiddly installation process only to find the game crashes. With a mod made without the full force of a mainstream studio, bugs and such are going to happen. Fallout: London is seemingly crashing frequently as you explore the decaying streets or even straight after the train crash scene – right at the beginning of the story. It’s enough to make you want to rage quit!

But before you yeet your controller in frustration, we have a handy fix first reported on VG247 who found it on Reddit. This should hopefully make Fallot: London a little more stable.

  1. Go to NexusMods and download Buffout4. Note, you only need the single Buffout 4 file, as the Fallout: London mod natively contains the rest.
  2. Extract the Buffout 4 Zip file, open the uncompressed folder, and locate the folder called F4SE
  3. In a new File Explorer window, open where you have Fallout 4 installed.
    • For GOG versions, the file path could look like: This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files (x86) > GOG Galaxy > Games > Fallout 4 GOTY
    • For Stean versions, it’s in: Steam > steamapps > common
  4. Click into the Fallout 4 Data folder, where you should find another folder called F4SE
  5. Drag the first F4SE folder from the Buffout 4 window into the second F4SE folder in the Fallout 4 window. This will move the files across.
  6. On the Fallout 4 window, back out of the folder and look for f4se_loader. Run it.
  7. This should launch Fallout: London with much fewer crashes.

To retain this stability, you’ll need to launch from f4se_loader each time you play Fallout: London in the future.

This is not a complete fix, as quicksaving in certain circumstances will cause a crash. It is recommended to save in quieter moments and not launch into a new area just after quicksaving.
